KUCHING: Two brothers charged with robbing a woman of her gold necklace claimed trial in the Sessions Court here yesterday.

Mohd Zulfikar Zaidan, 31, and Mohamad Zaiwawi Hanafiah Zaidan, 28, from Kampung Tabuan Melayu Ulu pleaded not guilty before Judge Amelati Parnell who ordered them to be further remanded in jail pending the disposal of the case.

Defence counsel Abdul Rahman Mohd Hazmi had asked for them to be released on bail, but prosecutor ASP Austin Patrick Angkon submitted to the court that robbery cases are getting rampant and this would be a warning that the authorities take such cases seriously.

The judge set Dec 16 and 18 for the trial, while pretrial case management would be held on Sept 3.

The brothers allegedly committed the offence around 3.50pm on July 15 this year.

According to the facts of the case, the complainant was walking alone when two persons on a motorcycle rode past her.

The pillion rider is said to have grabbed her necklace.

Members of the public who witnessed the incident gave chase and this caused the motorcycle to ram into a car, throwing both riders to the ground.

Passers-by then helped to apprehend the suspects, who were later surrendered to the police.

The duo will be tried under Section 395 of the Penal Code, a Section that provides up to 20 years in prison and caning upon conviction.
