KUCHING: Mainstream media is still relevant today despite the upsurge of alternative media in the internet.

State director of Information Department Abang Sardon Abang Hasyim said the main stream media’s role was still relevant as it stuck to accurate and credible reporting.

“I believe the public still rely on traditional media such as newspaper and television to verify the truth as information being made viral by certain people using social media could be inaccurate,” he said in his speech to media fraternity in Kuching at the Information Department Sarawak Hari Raya open house here on Thursday.

Sardon added that he noticed there are more news organisations here now in Kuching as compared to 10 years ago.

He noted that the publicity on government functions given by the media had contributed to their success and he called for more support in helping government departments organise their programmes .

“We want printed and electronic media to continue as our partner to promote and publicise various government events,” he said.

Earlier before he started his speech he called for prayers for his predecessor Resat Salleh who passed away last September
