MIRI: Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) has urged road users not to vandalise streetlights saying that the irresponsible act is costing the company.

Commenting on the media’s inquiry related to the issue of frequent streetlight break down, its regional manager Choo Min Chong revealed that most of the time, SEB was not able to track the person responsible for the vandalism and so they have to bear the cost.

“At times, we noticed that motorists rammed into streetlights either during midnight or festive seasons. Under these circumstances, it is very difficult to solve but eventually we have to bear with the situation.”

Choo added that the replacement cost is estimated at about RM2,000 each.

“Under any circumstances, we will first lodge a police report. Then, proceed to replace it first. It is impossible to wait for the person responsible to pay the penalty because it would be very inconvenient to other road users,” he said.

Meanwhile, Communication Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin urged SEB to take note of tree branches covering electrical wires. “I have received many complaints relating to the matter. It is only proper to have SEB to respond to it directly,” he said at a press conference.
