New flight tracker system to provide consistent monitoring throughout flights

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The country’s aviation industry recently received a significant boost with the acquisition of services aimed to better track its fleet of aircraft especially in the wake of the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, Brudirect reported.

Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) has installed a new flight tracker system developed by the world’s leading specialist for transport communications and information technology SITA whose services are also used by the likes of Singapore Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle, an RB spokesperson said.

According to SITA in a recent press release, its product peruses existing equipment and re-purposes air traffic control data to provide consistent monitoring throughout flights. The technology is described as a ground-based, cost-effective software upgrade that uses existing equipment to allow airlines to follow aircraft positions and identify any unexpected deviations or gaps in positioning reports.

“Since the MH370 aviation incident, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has recommended through state regulators for airlines to install a tracking system,” RB said.

The SITA technology uses satellite systems, VHF communication system and the Internet and works with the installation of an automatic dependent surveillance-contract (ADS-C) receiver at the Brunei International Airport.

The technology will allow for a 15-minute or less tracking interval through multiple sources of data and was designed to meet the criteria set by ICAO and the International Air Transport Association that called for a global tracking technology that uses existing equipment and procedures as much as possible following the disappearance of Flight MH370 last year.
