KOTA KINABALU: The Sessions Court here yesterday fixed September 28 for the case management on a man accused of shooting a mechanic at an air-conditioning service centre at Jalan Tuaran Bypass on May 6 at around 5pm.

Judge Azreena Aziz set the date for the case of Mohd Jusnaidi Omar, 44, who is also known as ‘Mat Malaya’ pending the production of the victim’s medical report as well as the chemist’s report.

The accused was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years upon conviction.

Mohd Jusnaidi had applied for bail through his counsel Farazwin Haxdy but it was dismissed on the grounds that the accused had allegedly committed a serious offence.

It was alleged that Mat Malaya shot Alkarim Atun, 36, following an argument at the air-conditioning centre. He then fled the scene and was spotted in Tawau two weeks later.

It was believed that the accused subsequently went into hiding in Ranau, where he was finally apprehended by police along with his 24-year-old wife and their two-month-old child at a homestay on June 1.

He reportedly faced a previous drug trafficking charge in 2007 but was freed by the High Court.

Deputy public prosecutor Afzan Abd Kahar appeared for the prosecution.
