KUALA LUMPUR: An investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has found that the RM2.6 billion allegedly deposited into an account of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak came from donors and not 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), the MACC said yesterday.

A report of the investigation has been referred to the Attorney-General, the MACC said in a statement.

The MACC explained that when the Special Task Force was set up, the investigation focused only on the issue pertaining to SRC International and the alleged deposit of RM2.6 billion into an account of the prime minister.

The Royal Malaysia Police meanwhile conducted an investigation on 1MDB and Bank Negara undertook a probe on the financial rules of procedure, it said. The MACC said in the statement that it was still investigating the issue of SRC International involving a sum of RM4 billion. It gave the assurance it would conduct an independent, transparent and professional investigation without “fear or favour” and regardless of who was involved, in accordance with its position as an independent commission.

“The MACC will not allow any party to influence or interfere in the investigation,” it said, and urged the people against making any speculation while the investigation was in progress.

It also reiterated that no MACC officer was involved in any conspiracy to topple the government and that the commission’s actions were solely for discharging its duties and functions as an independent body.

“The responsibility of the MACC is to investigate corruption cases and is not aimed at toppling any party, including the government,” the commission said in the statement. On police investigation on its officers, the MACC said it would extend its full cooperation. — Bernama
