KUCHING: Sim Yoon Chiang made a quick start to the Southern Zone Snooker Championship that kicked off on Monday at Champion Snookerium.

He outplayed Malvin Wong 2-0 in the last 32 to set up a last 16 clash with Edmund Bong who dispatched Firdaus Fazil to the sidelines with a 2-1 win.

Others making it to the last 16 on Monday night were Daren Liew who thumped Scott Paul 2-0, HK Teng who edged Kho Boon Ong 2-1, Tay Chong Yong who edged David Lim Yong Chen 2-1, Ismail Puteh and Steven Chay who beat Zainal Abidin and Andy Tho Chin Ann by 2-0 respectively.

Also booking his place in the last 16 on Tuesday was Donald Ting who edged Edmund Chong 2-1. His next opponent is Ong Hon Fook after the latter saw off the challenge from Anthony Chua 2-0.

The duo are joined by Herry Lee, Chong Thian Poh, Taxi Seng, Lo Wee Kok and Doll.

Gary Wong did not lose any sweat in booking his berth in the last 16 as he enjoyed a walkover win over Jacob Wong.

The top two winners of this championship will represent Sarawak together with two winners each from the Central Zone and Northern Zone competitions in next year’s national level championship organised by the Malaysian Snooker and Billiards Federation.
