KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission yesterday confirmed that the RM2.6 billion deposited into an account of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is a donation from the Middle East.
It said in a statement: “The MACC has obtained an explanation from the donor on the donation given to the Prime Minister.
“The MACC knew of the details of the donor through a document taken from the bank and it was found that four letters were sent to the bank when the large sum of money was deposited into the account of the Prime Minister.” The statement said that the document explained that the RM2.6 billion was a donation.
It also said that Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would be asked to elaborate to the MACC on the donation he had received.
The MACC said its investigation was not related to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad issue, and that the probe into the 1MDB case was carried out by the police.
It also reiterated that the investigation on the issue of SRC International involving RM4 billion was ongoing.
The MACC said the investigations into the RM2.6 billion fund and the SRC International issue were “two different matters”.
“As such, the MACC wants to emphasise that it has never stated that the case under probe has been closed.
Instead, the MACC has only stated that it (the fund) was not from 1MDB,” it said.
The MACC gave the assurance that the investigation would be undertaken in an independent, transparent and professional manner and asked all quarters to give it room to conduct the probe in a comprehensive manner without any form of speculation.
“As an independent commission, the MACC has the responsibility to conduct investigations in an independent, transparent and professional manner without fear or favour.
“The MACC will not allow anyone to influence or interfere in its investigations,” it said. — Bernama
