808 assembly proceeds peacefully

KUALA LUMPUR: About 200 people including lawyers and media activists attended the ‘808 Assembly’ at Pasar Seni here today which, among others, was organised to demonstrate against the suspension of The Edge newspapers.

Participants gathered in front of Pasar Seni compound at about 10.30 am before walking to Dataran Lebuh Pasar in front of the Malaysian Bar Council building carrying banners with messages such as ‘Media are not enemies and ‘Journalism is not a crime’.

The assembly which lasting one and half hours was ruly and under police control.

Also seen were Yayasan Gerakan Kesederhanaan Global (GMM) chief executive officer Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua and former Bar Council president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.

The permit of The Edge Weekly and The Edge Financial Daily were suspended for three months effective from July 27 following reports on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). -Bernama
