SJK Thai Kwang rule as Primary champs in Sibu

SIBU: SJK Thai Kwang amassed 156 points to lift the overall title in the Sibu Division Inter-Primary Schools Athletics Championships which ended on Thursday afternoon at Tun Zaidi Stdium.

In the Boys’ section, SJK Sentosa were champion with 77 points. SJK (C) Thai Kwang secured 92 points to take the Girls’ title.

In the individual category, Aqif Izzan was adjudged the Best Sports Boy in Under-12. The SJK Sentosa pupil rewrote the record in the high jump with a new height of 1.49m. Nelzrin of SK Thian Chin was Best Sports Boy in the Under-11 category with his two gold medals in the 100m and 200m.

Best Sports Boy in U-10 was shared between Edderis Ujan of SJK Jalan Deshon and Nurhisyam Sarbini from SK Agama.

Alice Tiong Mee Yan (SJK Sacred Heart Chinese), Flora Nicole (SJK Thai Kwang) and Nurul Hidayani (SJK Thian Chin) were the Best Sports Girls in U-12, U-11 and U-10 respectively.

In brief closing remarks, William Anut of the Sibu Division Education Department said outstanding athletes would be picked to represent Sibu Division in the coming state-level meet in Miri from Aug 26-28.

He reminded the shortlisted athletes to train hard and aim for the overall titles.

“Sibu has lifted the overall title for 12 times and it is not beyond our ability to come back with another,” he said.

He also disclosed that the Ministry of Education had started a talent identification programme whereby excellent pupils would be roped in to undergo intensive training.

“Hopefully, some of our athletes will be shortlisted to undergo intensive training and eventually bring glory to the state.”

A total of 350 athletes from 28 primary schools in the Sibu Division took part in the two-day championships.
