KUCHING: Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Abang Hipni is likely to be retained as Barisan Nasional’s (BN) candidate for the constituency during the next state election.

State BN chairman Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem confirmed this to the applause of those attending the launch of the Sungai Bako Bridge project yesterday.

“BN candidate for Demak Laut in the next state election remains unchanged, no one else unless he is disqualified to contest for whatever reason, which I think is not going to happen,” said Adenan.

He called on Demak Laut constituents to give their undivided support to the BN candidate to ensure continuous development in the area.

“We have achieved quite a lot since I took office 15 months ago but I have to admit that there are a few things still unaccomplished, which I will continue to fight for till we get them,” said Adenan.

He pointed out that more Sarawak MPs were appointed ministers or deputy ministers at federal level during the recent cabinet reshuffle, demonstrating recognition of the people’s support for Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and the state BN as a whole.

“The federal leaders listen to what I say because PBB is now the second biggest party in terms of MPs after Umno so this should be maintained for a greater Sarawak,” he stressed.

During the 2011 state election, Dr Hazland replaced incumbent Datuk Dr Abang Abdul Rauf Abang Zen, who opted not to defend the seat.

Dr Hazland defeated Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (PKR) Ali Hossen Abang with a 3,752-vote majority by polling 5,522 votes against his opponent’s 1,770.

Among those present at the event yesterday were Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dato Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communication Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong, Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom and State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani.
