KUCHING: Pelagus assemblyman George Lagong, 55, has gone back to Sarawak Workers Party (SWP), the party he left in May last year to join Teras and eventually became an Independent assemblyman.

SWP president Larry Sng, who made the announcement yesterday, said the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) would be duly informed of this latest development.

“An official letter will be handed to Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar during the one-day DUN sitting on Aug 17 to state his (George) intention to formally join SWP,” said Sng at a press conference held at George’s residence.

The letter, he added, would also explain George’s leave of absence during the one-day sitting. George, he said, needed more time to recuperate from his injuries sustained during a road mishap last May 30 along Sebangkoi-Sibu Road.

Sng said with the inclusion of George, SWP now had two assemblymen, the other being Meluan assemblyman Wong Judat.

The return of George, a former SWP deputy president, said Sng, was warmly accepted by party members and the SWP-DAP election committee.

Meanwhile, Sng said the party and the election committee would deliberate soon on the possibility of giving back to George the deputy president post in SWP, and the possibility of him defending Pelagus in the next state election.

“It will be premature for me to say it now if he (George) will be defending his seat. The election committee will discuss this in detail as we will weigh the pros and cons of each candidate.”

Sng also urged all opposition parties to unite and leave their grudges on the back burner to face the next state election, which must be called by June next year.
