KUCHING: Kem Badminton Astro (KBA) Kota Kinabalu saw a great turn with over 300 participants attending last week’s try-out held in Dewan Badminton Kompleks Sukan Likas.

The search will continue in Sarawak on Aug 15 & 16 at Arena Sukan Simpang Tiga, Kuching.

Interested participants aged between 10-12 years old are encouraged to walk in at 9am to register on Aug 15.

This will be the last regional session before the camp heads back to Peninsular Malaysia.

The final try-out sessions in Kuala Lumpur will be held at Kompleks MSN, Jalan Raja Muda on Aug 22 to 23.

Talented participants stand a chance to be selected for an Intensive Advanced Training in Japan, thanks to the partnership between Astro Kasih, the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of Astro and Nippon Badminton Association (NBA) recently.

The 3-year strategic partnership provides training for Kem Badminton Astro shuttlers for two weeks at the Japan National Training Centre, Tokyo from Nov 21 to Dec 2 by a team of Japan’s national coaches.

Prior to that, 60 participants will first be shortlisted to undergo a one-week Intensive Training in Kuala Lumpur conducted by former national badminton champions Wong Choong Hann, Lee Wan Wah, Chew Choon Eng and Chan Chong Ming.

Selected shuttlers can also look forward to a cultural exchange programme with the Japan Junior Team which includes training under Malaysian coaches in Kuala Lumpur in Aug.

Launched in 2012, KBA is a collaboration between Astro Kasih, Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of Youth and Sports, Badminton Association Malaysia (BAM) and Nippon Badminton Association, Japan.

The project aims to identify and nurture talented children aged between 10-12 years through comprehensive training programmes.

Kem Badminton Astro was initiated to encourage young Malaysians with aspirations to be the next world badminton champions to realise their dreams.

Over 4,300 kids have participated in the Kem Badminton Astro since the launch in 2012.
