SIBU: A police inspector was yesterday indicted in the Corruption Court here on three charges of corrupt practices involving RM16,000.

Mohamad Nazri Daheri, 36, pleaded not guilty.

The first charge said he accepted a gratification of RM3,000 from one Stephen Kon as an inducement for him to give protection on illegal logging that happened at Sungai Kut in Kapit.

The offence allegedly took place at Restaurant Tekam Café in Kapit at about 3.40pm on Aug 24 last year.

For the second charge, he is alleged to have corruptly agreed to accept RM5,000 from Stephen Kon through a Maybank
account belonging to Fitero Rafi-ee as an inducement for him to give protection on illegal logging that happened at Sungai Kut, Kapit.

He allegedly committed the offence at Maybank Tabuan Jaya branch, Kuching at 11.58am on Sept 11 last year.

The third charge said Mohamad corruptly agreed to accept a gratification of RM8,000 from Stephen Kon as an inducement for him to give protection on illegal logging that happened at Sungai Kut, Kapit.

He allegedly committed the offence at Kingwood Hotel’s Restaurant Riverfront café at 10.35am on Oct 20 last year.

According to the charges, Mohamad was then a police inspector attached to the Criminal Investigation Department at Kapit District Police Headquarters.

The three offences are framed under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act which provides for a jail term not exceeding 20 years and a fine not less than five times the value of the gratification which is the subject matter of the offence where such gratification is capable of being valued or is of a pecuniary nature, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Prosecuting officer from MACC Kuching, Katherine Nais, preferred the charges against Mohamad who was represented by Counsel Louis Jarau.

Judge Nixon Kennedy Kumbong fixed Sept 7 as the date for case management and Oct 5 to 9 for trial.

Mohamad was released on extended bail of RM10,000 with one surety.
