MIRI: A 41-year-old cook was found dead in the bathroom of a hotel here on Wednesday night in an apparent suicide.

The man could have died from carbon monoxide poisoning from burning charcoal which was inside two bowls in the bathroom, said Miri acting police chief Supt Stanley Jonathan Ringgit.

The body was found at the ninth floor of the hotel around 9.30pm by its staff when the man did not check out.

According to police, the deceased checked in at the hotel on Tuesday and was supposed to check out on Wednesday afternoon.

However, he never came to the hotel’s counter to check out, prompting the hotel staff to check his room.

Police were immediately summoned to the scene after the hotel staff saw the man’s lifeless body in the bathroom.

“Police inspection discovered that the openings and edges of the bathroom door were all sealed tight,” said Stanley.

Stanley added that the case had been classified as sudden death and ruled out foul play.

The body has been brought to Miri hospital mortuary for a post mortem.
