KUCHING: The handing-over of tasks to locals should be speeded up to ensure better services by government agencies, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri said.

She also said she supported the call by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem for more power to be given to Sarawak for its state administration.

“We support the call for more autonomy for the state government to administer sectors such as education, welfare, agriculture, youth development, etc, as it will enable faster delivery of services.

“In fact, local people know the needs of the state and its people, thus can make better decisions,” said Nancy.

She was speaking to reporters after attending the triennial delegates conference (TDC) of Union of Telecom Employee’s Sarawak (UTES) here yesterday.“Apart from faster delivery, such move would save costs in terms of management, and the money can be used for something else,” she added.

She pointed out that hiring an officer from West Malaysia would mean more time for the department and the officer to understand the local situation.

On another matter, Nancy said the government was looking into amending the Marriage and Divorce Act 1976 to solve outstanding cases involving divorce of couples from different religions.

“We will harmonise the civil and syariah rules to ensure this matter will not arise and create the best solution to such condition,” she said.
