OK-swak boxing-pix-160815KUCHING: The Sarawak Boxing Association (Saba) hope to unearth unpolished gems in the National Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament to be held at Kubah Ria here from Sept 14-20. Saba secretary Azli Karim told thesundaypost the tournament will feature boxers from all over the country and a special appearance by boxers based at the Muara Tuang Camp. “We expect 120 boxers to compete in this tournament.

This tournament is also jointly organised by Saba, the Malaysia Boxing Association and the First Division,” he added.

Nine weight categories will be contested during the tournament: 46-49kg, 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg, 81kg and 91kg. Meanwhile, Saba president Dato Rahman Lariwoo revealed that the association is committed to finding quality boxers now that Sukma 2016 is fast approaching.

“As hosts, there is no way that we want to look like push-overs in front of our own crowd. We will do our best to emerge overall boxing champions during the games next year,” he said.

Earlier this year, Saba had announced that it was organising a series of tournament to uncover more boxers with the potential to represent the state. “We will go all around the state to find them.

We do have a batch but I think we can find more out there if we are vigorous enough in our scouting,” said Rahman. More information on the National Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament can be obtained from Azli himself at 019-8211975 or 011-18557579.
