SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government conceded that the problem of drainage system that is not being properly maintained has caused 20 new flood prone areas in the state as at Aug 16.

State Infrastructure and Pulic Amenities, Modernisation of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Committee chairman Zaidy Abdul Talib said the depth of the drainage system with outdated capacity and erratic weather had also contributed to flash floods.

“The 77 flood hotspots with 95 cases detected have caused flash floods while the design of the drainage system cannot accomodate excessive rainfall that exceeds 60 cubic metres within one to three hours,” he said at the Selangor state legislative assembly sitting here today.

He was replying to an oral question from Datuk Mohd Shamsuddin Lias (BN-Sungai Burong) who queried on the status of flash floods in Selangor.

Nevertheless, he said the relevant agencies, including local authorities had been taken to task regarding the problem.

He said the state government also planned to upgrade the retention ponds in Selangor to mitigate flash floods in the state.

Up to date, he said 84 retention ponds were being maintained by the Drainage Irrigation Department with an allocation of RM6.7 million to deepen them once within four years. -BERNAMA
