LABUAN: A 20-year-old female student of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Kota Kinabalu was killed in a road accident at Jalan Bebuloh here on Tuesday.

Labuan police chief Superintendent Adzhar Othman yesterday said that the deceased was identified as Noor Haini Muda, an accountancy student from Lahad Datu.

He said based on police investigation, Noor Haini was driving a Perodua Viva car from UMS, Labuan International Campus (UMS-KAL) towards the town along Jalan Bebuloh. Travelling with her were her two friends, Sabtura Isirani, 22, from Kampung Sri Melor, Semporna, and Amnie Asbah, 21, from Kampung Paal Seberang Tenom.

Noor Haini from Sahabat 16, Lahad Datu, was in Labuan for the university’s ‘Alumni Pulang ke Ganggang’programme with her two UMS friends.

“The mishap occurred at 3.45pm when she lost control of the car, causing it to skid and slam into the guardrail before swerving to other side of the road and colliding head-on with a Perodua Alza car coming in the opposite direction. The driver of the Perodua Alza was pinned inside the vehicle with his wife and two daughters.

“All the victims were freed by the fire and rescue personnel and rushed to the Labuan Hospital for emergency treatment,” he said.

Noor Haini died at 5pm while receiving treatment for severe internal injuries. Her two friends sustained a broken left thigh and superficial injuries respectively.

The driver of the other car, Imran Dorong, aged 34, suffered a slight head injury and his three-year-old daughter, Nur Ain Imran, broke her left thigh. His wife and the other daughter escaped injuries.

Adzhar said the police had informed the victims’ families.

The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1)(B) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and blood samples of both drivers had been taken for investigation.
