KUCHING: Sarawak’s top golfer Lee Ka Tung is expected to face a stiff challenge in this year’s 8th Sarawak Masters Golf Championship which tees off today at Damai Golf and Country Club (DGCC) in Santubong.

The Sibu Golf Club (SGC) golfer had just bagged his third title of the year at the 26th Sibu Amateur Open Golf Championship (SAOGC) on Aug 16 and is looking forward to defending his title at the 8th Sarawak Masters.

Ka Tung also captured his ninth title in this year’s 27th Sarawak Classic golf championship held at Sarawak Golf Club (KGS) and had earned his licence to turn pro after winning Kuching’s leg of PGM’s Development Qualifying School Circuit on May 20.

The hardworking zero-handicapper will face other contenders from Taiwan who have entered for the 8th Sarawak Masters for the first time and they are namely Yeh Yu Chen, Wang Wei Hsien, Lin Wei, Liu Wei Fan and Chang Hsiu Chi.

This year’s event also attracted entries from neighbouring Brunei’s Empire Golf and Country Club (EGCC), Kelantan and Melaka where a total of 200 golfers are competing in the three-day event sanctioned by the Sarawak Golf Association (SGA).

Apart from the coveted Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing Challenge Trophy up for grabs, attractive prizes valued at over RM42,000 are offered in the Men’s Open and Invited Guest categories and topped up with over RM200,000 worth of hole-

in-one prizes.

Hole-in-one achievers will stand to win prizes including a Harley Davidson XL883N Iron (883cc) worth RM80,000; Ducati Multistrada (1,198cc) worth RM110,000; a Tag Heuer watch worth RM11,700 and a Frederick Constant Geneve watch worth RM11,900.

Attractive prizes offered to winners include a set of Fourteen TC888 with Shimada K’s 7001 shaft worth RM5,088; a set of Maruman TW Pro with Shimada K’s 7001 shaft worth RM3,805.40; a set of XX10 8 NSPRO worth RM5,088 and one unit Voltio II Gold Driver worth RM4,000.

After the 8th Sarawak Masters Golf Championship, the local golf fraternity can look forward to competing in the 2nd Sarawak Grand Championship to be held at KGS next weekend while this year’s Samarahan Amateur Open championship is to be held from Sept 4-6 and the Miri Golf Club (KGM) Amateur Open is on from Sept 18-20 while the Bintulu Amateur Open is from Sept 25-27 at the Bintulu Golf Club (BGC).
