KUANTAN: An assistant registrar of a Syariah Court was charged in the Sessions Court here yesterday with bribery, involving RM3,500, last year.

Mohd Kahar Arshad, 48, who is with the Pekan Syariah Court, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was alleged to have accepted the bribe from one Hurul-Ain Hanafi at 4.20pm on May 28, 2014, at Restoran D’Oasis, Jalan Putra Square here.

The money was an inducement for Mohd Kahar to revoke the marriage between Hurul-Ain, 31, and one Mohamad Zaki Ahmad Ghazali, 38.

The couple was alleged to have been married in Aceh, Indonesia, but the marriage was said to be void as the marriage certificate was issued by the Pattani Islamic Religious Council in Thailand.

Mohd Kahar was arrested on Aug 28 last year, a day after Hurul-Ain lodged a report.

The charge, under Section 17 (a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act, provides an imprisonment for up to 20 years and fine of RM10,000 or five times the amount of the bribe, whichever is higher, if found guilty.

Judge Habibah Mohamed Yusof allowed Mohd Kahar bail of RM5,000 in one surety and set Sept 30 for mention. — Bernama
