St Joseph’s International School to open in 2017

KUCHING: A new international school is set to open its doors to foreign and local students here in January 2017.

St Joseph’s International School is currently inviting applications for Year 7 (equivalent to Form 1) with classes set to start in January 2017. St Joseph’s Private School director Gerald Lee told reporters when met recently that the school was granted a licence last November by the Ministry of Education.

The school management plans to build the school on a 15-acre site in the Muara Tuang Land District, Kota Samarahan.

The first phase of the new school which costs RM17.5 million is targeted for completion in 2018. Pending completion, classes will be held at SK St Teresa, Padungan.

The new Catholic international school will share the same board of directors as St Joseph’s Private School and will be managed by a religious congregation assisted by a team of trained, experienced and dedicated teachers.

He added that it will be a full-f ledged boarding school with classrooms and academic and recreational facilities including design and technology lab, music room, lecture theatre, hall, chapel, football field and basketball court. Class size will be limited to 25 pupils per class.

The school offers the Cambridge syllabus leading to the Cambridge ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels examinations. All subjects will be taught in English. Malaysian citizens are required to study Bahasa Melayu, Islamic Studies/Moral Studies and Malaysian History.

Classes for Bahasa Melayu will be taught in Malay while the latter two subjects will be conducted in English and Malay.

According to a press statement, the single session co-ed school will have lessons from 7.30am to 3.30pm followed by extra-curricular activities.

Development of soft skills such as creative arts – music, drama and dance, and the nurturing of interpersonal skills and leadership qualities will be provided through holistic education.
