KAPIT: Men and women must work together to achieve their common objectives, Dewan Negara deputy speaker Senator Datuk Doris Brodie said.

She advised them that as members of organisations, they should see themselves as equal partners in moving their organisations forward to achieve their goals.

She gave this advice when speaking at the 15th anniversary celebration of Kapit Chinese Women Association (KCWA) here on Saturday, which she noted was attended by an equal number of men and women.

“Men and women must treat each other as equal partners and work hand in hand to reach their common goals together.

“It’s undeniable that women are important assets to our country. They play an important role in developing our country. Today many women hold high-ranking jobs and of course larger responsibility, putting them at the same level as men,” she said.

On the association, she commended it for having progressed since its inception 15 years ago.

“For an association to be able to make its presence felt for 15 years, it is a remarkable achievement. From your souvenir magazine, I can see that you’re really active and doing a lot of activities over the years,” she said.

She encouraged KCWA to work with government departments and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Serakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) to promote multiculturalism and cooperation through networking.

She told KCWA members that with their commitment, the association would be able to attract more participation of women as members, who then could realise their potential in politics, economics and community work through motivation courses and study visits conducted by the association.

Later, Doris announced a grant of RM5,000 for the association

The highlights of the evening were presentations by a choir, poco-poco dancing, cake cutting, karaoke singing, folk dances, lucky draws and presentation of awards to outstanding members.

Association chairperson Wong Kie Ing, organising chairperson Kapitan Yap Hui Le, political secretaries to the chief minister Jefferson Jamit Unyat and Wilson Nyabong Ijang and community leaders were among those attending the celebration.
