Dr Noor Hisham: Dengue killed 212 this year

PUTRAJAYA: A total of 212 fatal dengue cases has been recorded nationwide, so far this year.

This is an increase of 72.4 per cent, as compared to 123 deaths reported in the same period last year.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said between Aug 9 and 15, a total of 11 deaths were recorded out of the 2,532 reported cases.

Compared to the previous week, he said seven states showed an increase in cases, namely Johor which recorded 72 cases; Perak (24), Penang (19), Negeri Sembilan (18), Sabah (nine), Melaka (six) and Kelantan (one).

“From January to Aug 15, the cumulative number of cases stood at 75,795, as compared with 59,790 cases recorded in the same period last year, an increase of 26.8 per cent or 16,005 cases,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

According to Dr Noor Hisham, there were 994 localities in 12 states where dengue was detected during the same week (Aug 9-15).

He noted that 599 of the total localities were reported in Selangor, Johor (223), Perak (41), Kelantan (32), Penang (19), Melaka (18), Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya (17) and Negeri Sembilan (11).

“Other states like Pahang, Sabah, Sarawak and Terengganu have less than 10 localities each,” he said. — Bernama
