KUCHING: All Sarawakians attending the peaceful Bersih 4.0 gathering in Kuching this Saturday should take pride participating in an event that will change the nation.

Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How said Bersih 4.0 was a people’s movement calling for the rise of all Malaysians to focus on its four main thrusts: a clean and fair election, good governance, saving the country’s economy and freedom of expression.

“It is foreseeable that this Bersih 4.0 will draw record crowd, but as the leaders of the civil movement like Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan and Maria Chin Abdullah had made clear, this peaceful gathering is not a protest but it is a pledge of the people to work towards these 4 main thrusts of Bersih 4.0,” he said in a press conference today.

Faced with political and economic turmoil, See said it was timely to launch Bersih 4.0 and get the process of national renewal and renaissance underway.

“With its broad appeal to draw attention and mass movement to contribute to the nation’s interests, it is an obligation for all Malaysians to take part in this peaceful gathering.

“I must praise the local organisers in Sarawak and the state police force for their cooperation in the planning and holding of the peaceful gathering in Kuching this weekend. With them working together, participants can be assured that there will be no untoward incidence in this historical event.”

See, who is state PKR vice chairman is hopeful that the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem will take part in this Bersih gathering in Kuching this Saturday, as Sarawak is in a position to play a leading role towards achieving the objectives of Bersih 4.0.

“With our racial and social diversity, Sarawak has more than just its exemplary harmonious and pleasant social order to showcase to the country. The state administration is also the only state in Malaysia to make a commitment for integrity in governance.

“And, our Chief Minister is in a position to tell the Election Commission to end its electoral gerrymandering that benefits the ruling BN government, that his state administration will prefer the Election Commission to ensure that the coming Sarawak state election be free and fair to lay the foundation for good governance.”

See said the chief minister should not maintain his silence over the economic turmoil that the country is experiencing, adding the alleged maladministration at the federal level had adversely affected all Sarawakians, in terms of GST implementation pushing up the costs of living, the global market sentiments that devalued our currency in response to our financial scandals and the deteriorating public institutions have a blanket effect on the whole country.

“It is therefore wholly mistaken to see Bersih 4.0 as a West Malaysian concern. All Sarawakians and Sabahans are as much affected by the political and economic upheaval and faced with an uncertain future, for as long as we are still a part of the federation.

“However, an unprecedented large crowd in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu this weekend in the national Bersih 4.0 movement will certainly set the pace for the rebirth and revitalisation of our nation.”

In Kuching, See said a legal team of more than 100 lawyers would be at the rally to assist those who face any problem throughout the rally.
