KOTA KINABALU: An alleged kidnapping of a little girl near SMK Kolombong on Tuesday that went viral in social media is false.

Disclosing this here yesterday, city police chief ACP M. Chandra said the news that went viral in social media claiming that a girl was almost being kidnapped on August 25 never took place.

“There was never a kidnap attempt in Kolombong or anywhere reported in the state capital.

“What actually happens was that the little girl had walked out of her house without her parents’ knowledge.

“She was found wandering around Taman Nelly in Kolombong by neighbours who immediately informed the girl’s parents.

“Coincidentally, a police team on patrol came to help and stayed with the little girl until her parents arrived.

“So there was no such kidnapping incident or any criminal activity that took place in Kolombong or surrounding areas as claimed in the social media,” he said yesterday.

Chandra urged the public not to simply believe unverified news in social media that could cause unnecessary panic and fear.

He also reminded those, who simply spread false information via social media to scare the public, could face stern action under the law.
