KUCHING: Azahari Hamdan has been using flags in creative ways to show his patriotism for the last 10 years. The 58-year-old’s zeal for National Day and Malaysia Day has continued to grow with each passing year and this time round he spent RM500 to decorate his house and car with flags, as well as had an outfit made entirely of flags.

“I just can’t help it but feel sad when people do not celebrate National Day like I do. I am very interested in decorations and I like to design my car in a way to display the Merdeka spirit,” he said yesterday.

“I will keep doing this until I am no more. My wife and children are all supportive of what I am doing, and they are even proud of it.”Azahari explained that it took him about one week to paste nearly 90 Jalur Gemilang and state flags of various sizes on his car.

“Some teachers told my kid that ‘your father is awesome’ and there are friends who like my design a lot,” said the father of seven children aged from 27 to 11.

“This is Malaysia and everyone regardless of race should come together for the celebration and stay united.” Azahari added the flags would remain on his car until after Malaysia Day as he aims to drive around the city as well as villages in Petra Jaya on Aug 31 and Sept 16. “I just want to feel happy, and this makes me happy.”
