Set up neighbourhood watch committees in urban areas — Lee

MIRI: Residents of housing estates, particularly in urban centres, including Senadin should set up neighbourhood watch committees in efforts to counter thefts or burglaries.

Assistant Minister of Communications, Datuk Lee Kim Shin said through such committee, neighbourhood spirit could be enhanced.

“Neighbourhood spirit in urban centres is not as strong as in villages or rural areas. Little or few crime cases were reported in villages compared to that in town or urban centres.

“Thus it is time for housing estates residents to set up neighbourhood watch committee,” said Lee when visiting Embang Awan – victim of a theft case at Desa Senadin Phase 3, Jalan Marigold here on Thursday.

Lee, also Senadin assemblyman, said through such committees various activities could be held apart from crime prevention talks and distribution of pamphlets on emergency telephone numbers.

During the visit Lee, accompanied by police personnel and Rela as well as Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) members, also distributed pamphlets on crime prevention and important telephone numbers.

He also urged the police and Rela to conduct frequent patrols to help reduce crime rates in housing estates. Similarly, he advised residents to take precautionary measures like securing their doors and vehicles when these are left unattended.
