BINTULU: A group of sweepers at a public park here were shocked to find a woman undergoing labour pain there yesterday morning.

Thanks to their quick action, the woman in her 30s, believed to be mentally unsound, safely gave birth to a healthy baby girl at the park.

A sweeper, who requested anonymity, said she and her colleagues doing cleaning work at about 7am yesterday noticed the woman sitting down in pain.

“Together with other members of the public, we calmed her down while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. When the ambulance arrived, the personnel helped deliver the baby, cut the umbilical cord and wrapped the baby in cloth,” the sweeper said.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that the woman is usually found collecting discarded cans in the area in the mornings and evenings.

Both the woman and her
baby were sent to Bintulu Hospital for furher care.
