KUCHING: The Hungry Ghost Festival or Zhong Yuan Jie celebration was held at carpark in front of BDC Everrise Supermarket on Friday night.

Organised by the Kuching Wushu Association for the fifth consecutive year, the event attracted curious members of the public.

Elaborate preparations for the offering ceremony started early in the afternoon with food offerings contributed by celebrants being laid out systematically for the ritual.

Abundant joss sticks and joss papers were also burnt for the dead.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang was among invited guests who participated in the celebration.

There were prayers and rituals led by the association chairman Kuan Choon Foo, followed by the “Qiang Gu” ceremony, where devotees are allowed to grab the food offerings.

The Hungry Ghost Festival is celebrated by the Chinese community worldwide on the 15th day of the seventh Lunar month every year.
