KUCHING: The premature ending of the Bersih 4 rally here came as a surprise for Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

When informed by reporters that the rally at Song Kheng Hai field ended yesterday morning instead of at 11.50pm, he said the turn of event was news to him.

“Oh really? No more, la. I see. All I can say is that this is news to me,” he replied.

However, when pressed for further comments, he said it was not the time for him to comment yet.

“Maybe later. Not now because I just heard the news, also.”

The Bersih 4 rally here, which started on Saturday, was brought to an abrupt halt by its organisers due to several factors, including the presence of many children at the field which might have breached the conditions of the rally, as well as technical issues involving the PA sound system, which was taken back by the company that owned it.

Earlier, Adenan and his wife Datin Patinggi Dato Jamilah Anu attended the prize-giving ceremony of the 2nd Sarawak Grand Championship, which was held at Kelab Golf Sarawak (KGS) yesterday.

In his speech, he left guests in fits of laughter when he said in jest that he would not want to sponsor the next Sarawak Grand Championship if he was no longer the chief minister.

“I’m told that this is the second Grand Championship, so presumably and hopefully, there would be a third one next year. It will be after the election.

“But what if I’m no longer the chief minister? I’m sorry, I will not want to sponsor it then. So you make sure I am the chief minister,” he joked, which elicited laughter from guests.

Adenan and Jamilah later presented prizes to winners of the golf tournament.

The Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem Trophy was won by Lee Ka Tung from Sibu, while Angel Hii from KGS won the Datin Patinggi Dato Jamilah Anu Trophy. Among those present at the ceremony were Assistant Minister of Environment Datu Len Talif Salleh and Sarawak Golf Association (SGA) president Hoan Kee Hock.
