KUCHING: Local photographers of any skill level are highly encouraged to join the Canon PhotoMarathon Malaysia 2015 on Sept 20, as it will not be held annually in Kuching.

Canon Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd senior branch manager Ho Bak Kee said it will be the first time the event is held in Kuching and there is no telling when it will be back because different cities will host it.

“Why hold this event? It is important for us to promote photography with the conventional camera. Although smartphone cameras are popular, there’s still a limitation to what it can do,” said Ho in a press conference yesterday.

The venue changes each year to highlight the beauty of each location.

It also gives local photographers an opportunity to participate.

Based at Boulevard Shopping Mall, participants will have to complete three themes that will only be announced on the day itself.

Participants are free to run around and create their photographic masterpieces within an allocated period of time.

They will be given the next theme upon returning to upload their submission before cut-off time.

There are two categories – open and junior.

Registration for the open category is RM30 (for those aged 19 and above) while it is RM15 per person for the junior category.

Walk-in participants will have to pay RM50.

Registered participants will receive a participation pack with the official Canon PhotoMarathon T-shirt.

Every year, the event’s total collection is donated to worthy causes. This year’s collection will be distributed to natural disaster funds in several states.

Winners will be announced on the same day.

The grand prize winner will take home a Canon EOS 5S Mark III DSLR camera worth RM13,799 and will join other international PhotoMarathon winners in an all-expense paid trip to Photo Clinic in Japan.

Canon PhotoMarathon is Canon’s largest annual photography event in the region, spanning 10 countries and bringing together photographic talent from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, India, Thailand, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Brunei.

Registration can be done online at http://photomarathon.canon-asia.com or offline at Canon Kuching Branch or the EOS Ambassador Centre.

Registration closes on Sept 13.
