PORT KLANG: Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) is facing a major challenge in winning back the support of Chinese voters in the state, says its chairman, Datuk Seri Noh Omar.
He said BN would experience a difficult task to reclaim Selangor in the 14th General Election (14GE) if it failed to reverse the voting trend of the community which leaned to the opposition, especially DAP.
“We have to accept this fact in Selangor. If we cannot garner at least 20 per cent of the Chinese votes, it will be difficult for us to win the state as the distribution of Malay voters and non-Malay voters is almost equal at 50 per cent each.
“Therefore, to regain the support of Chinese voters, not only Umno but the other component parties like MCA and MIC should activate their respective machinery and work harder,” he told reporters after inspecting the upgrading works on the drainage system to overcome flash floods in Port Klang areas, here, yesterday.
The present distribution of seats in the Selangor state assembly is DAP and PAS having 15 seats each, PKR (13), BN (12) and Independent (1).
Noh, who is the Selangor Federal Action Council chairman, was commenting on the call by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for Selangor Umno to get out of their comfort zone and serve the people to recapture the state in the 14GE.
When opening the Puchong Umno division meeting on Monday, Ahmad Zahid who is Umno vice-president, also wanted support at the grassroots to be strengthened, especially among the Chinese and Indian voters.
He said Chinese support in Selangor fell to 13.4 per cent in the 13GE compared to 29.8 per cent in the 12GE. — Bernama
