Top wushu students share the honours

SIBU: Jordan Tie, 7, won three gold medals to emerge the best male player in the lower primary category of the 2015 Sarawak Inter-school Dragon Lion Dance & Wushu Championship held here last weekend.

Tie from SJK (C) Dung Sang, impressed the judges with solid performances in the basic nanquan, basic dashu and basic gunshu.

Eight-year-old Yong Jia Rong from the same school also grabbed three gold in the same events to claim the best female player award.

Sibu Martial Arts (Quanshu) Association (SMAA) chief coach Gilbert Wong described the two as the latest talents unearthed.

Chai Kian Heng of SJK Stampin and Wallace Liew of SJK Chung Hua No. 2, both from Kuching, shared the title of best male player for the upper primary after collecting three gold each.

The best female player in the upper primary was also shared between Wong Yu Jie of SJK © Kai Chung,

Bintangor and Vanessa Xin Lin of SJK Chung Hua Batu 4 ½ Kuching after each won two gold a silver.

Phang Yii Gin and Lim Kah Woon, both from SMK Riam Road of Miri, with three gold medals each, lifted the title in the male lower and upper secondary category respectively.

Sharon Ong of SMK Kai Chung, Bintangor and Yang Nyit Ju of SMK Bandar Kuching No. 1 both won the best female players in the lower and upper secondary category respectively with three gold medals each.

For the Best Dragon and Lion Dance team award, Guong Ming Middle School emerged champion with six gold and two silver, followed by SM Wong Nai Siong with one gold and a bronze.

Miri’s Riam Road Secondary School and SMK Sacred Heart, both with a silver each, shared the third spot.

Guong Ming Middle School also swept the best player awards for the Best Dragon and Lion Dance individual section. Lau Bik Ming, with five gold and one silver, was champion, followed by Yong Zhi Ping, Hii Sieng Ying and Khong Ing Siong (all with 4-1) and Alan Lau and Lee Hing (both with four gold medals).

A total of 140 wushu exponents took part in the tournament jointly organised by SMAA jointly with SM Guong Ming Alumni. The participants were from Kuching, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu and Miri.
