Song leads Sarawak federation to scoop multiple awards as flag-bearer

KUCHING: The Nanyang Wushu Federation of Sarawak, which represented the Martial Arts Federation of Malaysia at the 1st Kinmen Cup World Wushu Championship held at Kinmen City Stadium recently, have returned with remarkable results and glory for Sarawak.

The Malaysian Nanyang Wushu Contingent was led by Prof Dato’ Sri Dr Song Swee Hee, battling against more than 30 countries with 3,000 competitors.

Dr Song was given due recognition for his promotion of wushu for more than four decades with the ‘Golden Lifetime Achievement Award’ by the organising committee.

Nanyang Wushu Federation of Sarawak, the Malaysian Contingent, won 10 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze medals out of 16 events contested and also ‘Best Team Award’ while Dato Sri Dr Yeo Liew Yian received the ‘Martial Arts Academic Thesis Award’.

Lai Lee Sze won three gold medals in three women’s events – wuzuquan FD2, group quanshu and female – southern style  broadsword FD2.

Alan Song Chun Hui won three gold medals in three men’s events – wuzuquan MC2, group quanshu and male – double broadsword MC2 and one silver in the male – cudgel MC2.

Reyes Chang Ty Roc, who is a student of SMK Green Road, won one gold in group quanshu, one silver (male – cudgel MA3) and one bronze (male – wuzuquan MA3).

Alvin Yeo Kai Xiang, a student of Swinburne University of Technology, won three gold in the male – shaolin tong zi gong,  group quanshu and male – wuzuquan MC1 and one silver in the male – cudgel MC1.

To date, the Malaysia Contingent of Nanyang Wushu have won a total of 239 gold medals, 117 silver medals, 55 bronze medals, 11 copper medals, 3 Golden Lion Awards, 2 Golden Dragon Awards, 3 Instructor Trophy, 23 Outstanding Performance Awards, 2 Special Sports Awards, 4 Best Coach Award, 1 Lion King Award, 1 Best Dedicative Award, 1 Outstanding Award toward the Development and Promotion of Wushu, 1 Best Writtten Thesis Award on Wushu 1st Prize Award, 2 Best Team Award, 1 Martial Arts Academic Thesis Award, 23 Excellent Performance awards and 1 Outstanding Team Leadership Award for the state and nation from 29 International and World Championships.

In 2005, they represented Malaysia in the Muscat Festival held in the Sultanate Of Oman, Middle East.

“Our proven track records have shown that we have put Malaysia into the world map of wushu and we are proud to wear the spirit of ‘Malaysia Boleh’ on our sleeves,” Dr Song said in a press statement yesterday.

“The participation of our contingent in this prestigious event will of course be a step further toward upgrading the standard and development of wushu in the country, thus putting Malaysia on the world map of wushu and also promoting Sarawak and Malaysia as a tourist destination,” he added.

Meanwhile, Nanyang Wushu Federation of Sarawak are now recruiting new trainees for enrolment at the federation’s 14 training centres located around Kuching.

The federation’s instructor-in-chief Dr Song encouraged interested students to enroll for the training sessions. This recruitment is organised as one of the Rakan Muda Wajadiri programmes.
