KOTA KINABALU: Ninety-seven people, including 39 children and infants, were detained by the State Immigration Department during several operations to flush out illegal immigrants still staying in the state capital.

Sabah Immigration Department enforcement chief, James Musa Singa said, the operations, dubbed Ops Ikrar (Sapu) were carried out at several squatter areas around the state capital beginning midnight until early yesterday morning.

¡§Around 136 people were checked by enforcement personnel and from the figures, 97 people, including 39 children and infants, were detained for failure to provide valid documents to be in the country,¡¨ he said yesterday.

James said those detained were taken to the Immigration Department to be investigated under the Immigration Act.

He added that such operatiosn would be carried out from time to time to flush out those who are still staying in the country illegally.

James also thanked members of the public for their continuous cooperation by providing information to the department.
