SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has no plans at the moment to give Sungai Merah market a major facelift, its deputy chairman Dato Andrew Wong told The Borneo Post yesterday.

“No, no at the moment as the market was just repainted about two years ago,” Wong said when asked if there was a plan in the pipeline to renovate it.

Asked if the market was catering well to the needs of the traders, he said he did not hear of any complaint.

He pointed out that most of hawkers there traded only for half a day.

“I guess the only complaint is not enough parking spaces for vehicles, but this happens everywhere,” Wong said.

Just behind the market is a ‘pasar tamu’ where traders there are mostly from longhouses in Pasai and Teku areas.

The tamu sells jungle produce, vegetables, fruits, fish, live chicken and barbequed food.

Meanwhile, at the full council meeting last month, SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said minor improvement works would be carried out on nine public toilets which come under the ‘My Beautful Malaysia Programme’. They are at Sungei Merah market, Jaya Lihua market, Taman Grand Heights,Tiong Hua Road market, Sungai Antu, Sukun Road, Pahlawan Bus Terminal, Taman Permai, and Sibu Gateway.
