KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem urges orchid enthusiasts to conduct more research and development (R&D) to further promote the industry.

He said the state was rich in flora with many species still unexplored.

“Those in the orchid industry should mount R&D to come up with varieties of orchid from a reservoir of indigenous species,” he said when launching the 3rd International Orchid Show 2015, at Orchid Park in Petra Jaya here yesterday.

He was represented by Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, who also read his text of speech.

“I am confident that this 3rd International Orchid Show will be a platform not only to increase our knowledge on orchids and its varieties, but also to exchange expertise in order to come up with more extraordinary hybrid orchids in future,” Adenan said.

He added the event provided a venue of opportunities for networking, selling, buying and meeting potential business partners from the participating countries. Seventeen teams from 13 countries – Japan, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Myanmar, Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia – are taking part in the four-day show until Sept 13.

The show organised by Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) also includes orchid species competition, orchid landscape competition and floral arrangement competition. The launching of the show also introduced a new orchid breed – Dendrobrium Jamilah Adenan.

Present were Adenan’s wife Datin Patinggi Dato Jamilah Anu, Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman, DBKU Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai and Abang Johari’s wife Datin Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang.
