Miri and Sibu spikers take U-14 titles

SIBU: Miri and Sibu divisions lifted the Boy’s and Girl’s titles respectively in the Sarawak Under-14 Volleyball Championship which concluded at Sibu Volleyball Court at Rejang Park yesterday.

Miri thrashed Mukah 3-0 (25- 22, 25-17, 25-21) in the boys fi nal while it was a walk in the park for the Sibu girls who won all their group league matches to bag the title. Sibu Volleyball Association President Dr William Ting Wei Ung was full of praise for the conduct of players during the three-day championship.

“The championship is fi lled with the spirit of camaradie and this is the healthy aspect which all the players had displayed at the championship,” he said at the closing of the championship yesterday afternoon.

Among those present were national coach Dato’ Moh Ung Ming, Johore Volleyball Association president Franco Lim and Malaysian Volleyball Association (Mava) secretary Joseph Gerard. In the boys fi nal, all eyes were initially on Mukah to deliver since the division had been producing impressive results of late.

However, it was the Miri team – powered by nine state players including the likes of Harold Sii, Chang Lee Kiet and Yek Tian Yiiu – who took the advantage of their height and build to control and dictate the game. They took the fi rst two sets at 25-22 and 25-17.

In the third set, Mukah players made a comeback to lead 14-10 only for Miri to claw back to regain the lead at 16-15 before winding up the set at 25-21. Earlier in the group match, Miri had also beaten Mukah 3-0 (25- 18, 28-15, 28-17) and swept aside Sarikei 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, 25-16) before setting up an easy semifi nal win over Sibu. For the Girl’s section, Sibu overcame Sarikei 3-1, thrashing both Mukah and Meradong 3-0 before easily disposed off Miri 3-0 in the fi nal league match.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Volleyball Association have shortlisted players to represent Sarawak in the upcoming National U- 14 championship to be held in Pahang. The boys are Wong Huan Xiong, Chang Lee Kiet, Harold Sii, Loh Yii Hong, Clement Wong, Brian Choek Kai Hang, Philip Yu, Moh Hieng Wei, Nicholas Sii Ting Kie, Gilbert Wong Lee Siong, Jee Yi Fei, Ling Sieng Han and Law Keh Wei.

The girls are Lau Ngiik Bing, Frennie Lau Yee Yen, Audrey Yong Ya Li, Lucy Ting Hui Voon, Debbie Chung Hui Yi, Rosalind Nee Siew Bing, Chua Xiao Ming, Amy Sia, Tracy Lau Xi Wei, Joyce Wong, Tiong Xin Hui, Maida Song Hua Ee and Betty Wong Ning Ning.
