Communication interception processing officers could listen in

KOTA KINABALU: A communication interception processing officer could listen to intercepted conversations of Lahad Datu intrusion suspects heard by another officer, the High Court here heard yesterday.

A processing officer who was testifying as a protected witness in the hearing into the armed intrusion in Lahad Datu, said each processing officer was supplied with a computer that was linked to the other officers’ computers.

“So it would be possible for a processing officer to be able to listen to the same intercepted conversation,” said the witness through a court interpreter who wore earphones to hear the witness’ voice.

The witness, who went by the initials AVB was testifying in the trial of 30 individuals linked to the intrusion by Sulu gunmen at Kampung Tanduo, Lahad Datu in February 2013.

The witness was asked by deputy public prosecutor Datuk Abdul Wahab Mohamed why the initials of another processing officer, BZM, appeared in a communication interception document, besides AVB.

AVB said in the communication interception document, marked P471E by the court, BZM had listened to and processed security information of one intercepted conversation, while the rest were done by AVB.

Abdul Wahab: Can you explain why it was BZM who did the communication interception in Item 02 of P471E (Bilangan 02 dalam P471E)? AVB: Maybe it was because at the time when BZM did the communication interception, I was instructed to do other work or was in the washroom.

AVB told the court that BZM would listen to the said conversation live, which would automatically be recorded in the computer. — Bernama
