24 teams vie for state futsal honours

MIRI: The three-day Sarawak Futsal Challenge Cup offering cash prizes totaling RM10,000 kicked off at Miri Indoor Stadium last Friday.

A total of 24 teams – 12 men and 12 women – participated in the third edition of the tournament organised by Ministry of Urban Development, Football Association of Sarawak and Miri Resident Office.

Prize money for the top four teams are RM2000, 1500, 1000 and 500.

Host Miri are represented by two teams each for the men’s and women’s categories.

The other teams are Limbang, Bintulu, Sibu, Sarikei, Mukah, Kapit, Betong, Sri Aman, Samarahan and Kuching.

Two-time winner Kuching was defending their title in the men’s competition.

Kuching women’s team won the inaugural championship in 2013 but Samarahan emerged champion last year.

Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin officiated at the tournament’s opening. Also present was Miri Resident Antonio Kahti Galis.
