KOTA KINABALU: The curfew in waters off the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) will be expanded to cover Beluran effective this Wednesday, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said yesterday.

He said the order for the expansion of the curfew area was made after taking into account the security situation in the areas concerned, and also upon request from several quarters.

“It is made to further strengthen security in waters off Sabah,” he added.

He said police believed there were many illegal entry points along the ESSZone which could be infiltrated.

“This has to be monitored for security sake and prevent cross-border crimes,” he said when announcing that the 7pm-5pm curfew in ESSZone, which was supposed to end tomorrow, had been extended until Oct 8. Currently, the curfew, implemented since July 19 last year, is enforced in six districts in ESSZone, consisting of Kinabatangan, Kunak, Lahad Datu, Sandakan, Tawau and Semporna. — Bernama
