KUCHING: SMK Sungai Tapang made a successful defence of their secondary schools overall championship title at the 2nd Kuching Division Inter-School Wushu Tournament at SJK Chung Hua No.3 Alumni Hall yesterday.

The 17-member team led by teacher Bong Ko Hung collected 78 points to beat nine other teams in the one-day competition organised by Kelab Wushu Bandar Kuching.

Coming in second place were fast improving St Joseph Private School who had 70 points, followed by SMK Kuching High (57 points) and SMK DPHA Gapor Stampin (14 points) in third and fourth spots respectively.

Other teams are Chung Hua Middle School No. 1, SMK Bandar Kuching No. 1, SMK Batu Kawa, SMK Green Road, SMK Kuching Town and SMk Sungai Maong.

In the primary schools section, SJK Chung Hua No. 4 emerged as the new overall champions after its 21 athletes collected 92 points.

Runners-up were SJK Chung Hua No. 2 with 89 points while SJK Chung Hua No. 3 and SJK Sam Hup Hin settled for third and fourth placings with 83 points and 49 points respectively.

Other schools in this categories include SJK Batu Kawa, SJK Bintawa, SJK Chung Hua No. 1, SJK Chung Hua No. 4, SJK Chung Hua No. 5, SJK Chung Hua No. 6, SJK Sungai Tapang, SJK Pending, SK Kenyalang, SK Song Kheng Hai and SK Lumba Kuda.

The kindergarten category saw the participation of six pupils from Sunrise Kiddy house, KBS Tadika Bodhi, Q-Dees Kindergarten and Little Learner.

The event aimed to unearth new talents to be absorbed into the Wushu Federation of Sarawak (WFS) development programme and select top exponents to represent Kuching in the Sarawak Wushu Championship to be held later this year.

The event is sanctioned and supported by Wushu Federation of Sarawak and the Sarawak State Sports Council.

Chairman of the Board of Management for Chung Hua Primary Schools No. 1-6, Kuching Wong Tiong Hock declared open the event and gave away the prizes.

Among those present were organising chairperson Ho It Chin, WFS deputy president James Ting and Kelab Wushu Bandar Kuching deputy president Ling Ung Hee who is also Centre of Excellence for Wushu, Kuching coach.
