KUALA LUMPUR: Malay non-governmental organisations (NGOs) coalition chairman Datuk Jamal Md Yunos was arrested at 8.50pm yesterday.

The ‘red-shirts’ rally leader was detained under Section 105 of the Penal Code, in relation to his statement that a riot will take place in a rally at Petaling Street today. Section 105 of the Penal Code provides police the power to detain anyone as a preventive measure to prevent any offence including riots.

Kuala Lumpur Crime Investigation Department chief Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad, who confirmed the arrest, said Jamal was taken to the Dang Wangi police station for further investigation.

Jamal was called to the Ampang Jaya police station earlier, at around 7.45 pm, to give his statement in regards to his police report lodged Wednesday on several allegations, including stepping and spitting on a picture of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as well as on an alleged attempt to rape a Malaysian actress.

He was accompanied by two lawyers, including Suzana Norlihan from Suzana Norlihan and Co. When met by reporters at Ampang Jaya police station earlier, Jamal denied that he was involved in today’s planned Petaling Street rally.

“I will be at Sungai Besar, Selangor tomorrow (today) to attend a Korban event in conjunction with the Aidiladha celebration,” he said.

It was reported that the rally at Petaling Street was to be held to object to the presenceof foreigners conducting business at the said area, including the selling of banned and counterfeit products.

On Thursday, the police had cautioned that strict measures would be taken on anyone who tried to create chaos at Petaling Street. Last Tuesday, Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz said he would not allow any rally to take place at Petaling Street or any other areas that could disrupt the public peace. — Bernama
