KUCHING: Sarawak finished third overall in the 25th National Wushu Championship which ended at SJK Chung Hua No. 3 Alumni Hall yesterday.

The state team captured one more gold, two silver and three bronze medals on the third and final day of the competition for a haul of four gold, two silver and five bronze.

Clement Ting Su Wei clinched his second gold in the championship when he posted 9.53 points in the men’s nanquan.

Second was Low Yun Ting of Negeri Sembilan (9.44) while Liang Khai Siang of Pahang and Ooi Yew Hung of Perak took the bronzes with 9.34 and 9.14 points respectively.

Sarawak’s silver was delivered by Bong Yun En who scored 8.33 points in the women’s traditional tajijquan while teammate Lai Yun Yi finished third (8.29).

The bronze medals came from Mandy Lim Xin Hui in the women’s traditional long apparatus, Lee Hui Xian in the women’s optional changquan and the group event.

Wushu Federation of Sarawak deputy president James Ting was pleased with the performance of the state exponents as he had predicted that Sarawak could win two gold medals.

“In fact, we did not set any medal target for our athletes as the main objective is to assess their standard and performance in this competition as well as to gauge their strengths and weaknesses,” he said.

Ting said Sarawak could have won more gold if some of the athletes had not committed errors while executing their moves especially on the balancing aspect.

“I believe that our head coach Yang NianWu is aware of that and will devise a training programme to correct their taolu routines,” he added.

Meanwhile, Malacca ended their campaign as overall champions after they captured 10 gold, nine silver and three bronze.

Runner-up were Negeri Sembilan (7-10-7) while finishing fourth and fifth were Johor (3-2-0) and Penang (2-3-4).
