Abang Jo hopes haze will not derail state’s tourist arrivals

KUCHING: Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said he was unsure whether the haze would thwart the state’s five million tourist-arrival target for this year.

“Honestly, there is an impact (of tourist arrivals due to haze), but I do not know how serious it is.

“For the first six months of this year, we had over two million tourists. I don’t have the figures for July to September yet.

“I think the haze has affected not only Malaysia. Singapore is also affected,” he told a press conference after representing Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem to open the Third National Business and Economic Seminar 2015 here yesterday.

Abang Johari said despite the haze, which had engulfed several parts of the state for about a month now, tourists were still visiting the state.

“I think we can achieve the five million tourist-arrival target. Even if we fail, the figure should be close to that target.”
