Man gets 11 months’ jail for theft

SIBU: A 26-year-old man was yesterday sentenced by the magistrates’ court here to 11 months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to two charges of theft.

The first charge against Alyister Bangau came under Section 380 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code. The Section carries an imprisonment up to 10 years and a possible fine.

According to the charge, he and another still at large stole a hand phone worth about RM600 from Mohammad Aeffyzanikhrulkhan at Bujang Suntong Road at about 5am on Aug 11.

He was sentenced to seven months’ jail for the offence.

The second charge under Section 379 of the same code, read together with Section 34 of the same code.

The Section provides for imprisonment up to seven years or a fine, or both.

Alyister and another still at large stole a pair of shoes belonging to a 17-year-old boy at the same time and place.

Fined RM1,000, Alyister chose the alternative sentence of four months in jail.

In the same court, a 19-year-old Indonesian, Aditya Irawan, was sentenced to five months’ jail
after he pleaded guilty to dishonestly receiving stolen property.

Aditya was caught at Wong King Huo Road at 11.10am on Aug 5 in possession of a stolen identification card, two driving licences, two student cards, a student discount card, and a smart book shop card – all belonging to a university student.

He was charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code which provides for up to five years’ jail or a fine, or both.
