SHAH ALAM: The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) will implement its solid waste separation programme at five locations in Shah Alam, beginning today.

Shah Alam mayor Datuk Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad said the programme was aimed at reducing the amount of solid waste dumped into landfills as well as reducing the use of new raw materials in reproducing products and goods.

“This program, called “Separation of Waste at House Pilot Project” is a trial measure taken by MBSA to educate and expose Shah Alam residents on the separation of solid waste.

“As an initial step, this programme will be implemented at five locations, namely Section 7 involving areas of Jalan Ferum, Jalan Pualam, Jalan Paladium, Jalan Vanadium and Jalan Iridium; Section 32 (Taman Anugerah, Taman Sri Bayu, Taman Bukit Naga 2 and Taman Bukit Naga 3); Section U8 (Jalan Adang and Jalan Bidai); Section U13 (Jalan Setia Indah 10) and Section U16 (Jalan Elektron),” he said at a press conference, here yesterday.

He said, a total of 1,700 housing units would be involved in the programme with residents required to separate their solid waste in accordance with its composition such as plastics, paper, glass and aluminium.

“Houses that have been selected for this programme will be given a set of coloured plastic, namely blue plastic for paper, orange for plastic waste, brown for glass and aluminium,” he said.

He said besides the coloured plastics, MBSA would also provide dustbins to make it convenient for the residents to keep their recyclable items. — Bernama
