SIBU: Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver was honoured at a dinner for athletes of Special Olympics Sarawak at Li Hua Hotel held in Bintulu last weekend.

Shell MDS (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd hosted the buffet dinner to celebrate the life of the founder, as part of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day (EKS Day) celebration, while the same athletes were treated to a luncheon at McDonald’s Restaurant by Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd the following day.

Various activities were rolled out over those two days, which included bocce games to challenge, encourage, motivate and inspire the athletes and coaches of Special Olympics Sarawak’s chapters of Bintulu, Miri and Sibu.

The athletes were also brought to the Borneo International Kite Festival 2015 to witness its closing ceremony.

Special Olympics Sarawak is a Malaysian affiliate of the Special Olympic global movement.

It emphasizes the use of sports to help people with intellectual disabilities and special needs to develop their strength to undertake daily activities themselves so as to become independent members of the community. This creates a new world of inclusion and community, where every single person is accepted and welcomed, regardless of ability or disability.

It thus makes the world a better, healthier and more joyful place – one athlete, one volunteer, and one family member at a time.

The Special Olympics movement honours Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day to celebrate her life as a global call to action for people to live in a more unified society in sports, in the community and in the work place.

It is hoped that committing acts of inclusion, acceptance and unity for and with people with intellectual disabilities can continue to build on the legacy of Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
