KUCHING: Dressed to kill in dapper mode, 63 motorcyclists from across the state gathered at Plaza Merdeka here for the ‘Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride’ – a charity motorcycle event held around the world on Sept 27.

According to Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride Kuching 2015 administrator and organiser, Tuah Brahim, 32, the event aims to raise awareness of prostate cancer.

“In Malaysia, prostate cancer gets the least attention compared to child cancer and breast cancer. Not many people are aware of it.

“Prostate cancer has become the biggest killer among men globally. Therefore, the event is held to raise awareness of prostate cancer,” he said.

It was the second time that the state capital was involved in hosting the ride, which gathered motorcycle enthusiasts on board their two-wheel café racers, bobbers, classics, trackers, customised machines and scooters.

The dapper riders gathered at Plaza Merdeka as early as 9.30am, before proceeding along the route that passed various landmarks across the city, including The Spring Shopping Mall, before arriving at Damai Central for a gathering and a photo-shoot session.

“Next year, we will try to get more involvement from the government, GLCs (government-linked companies), sponsors and volunteers for the event,” Tuah added.

The ‘Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride’ was inspired from the iconic image of a smartly-attired gentleman on board a classic motorcycle. The first ride was run in Australia in 2012, with the objective of having ‘like-minded dapper souls’ together and letting them have fun.

Since then, it has captured the imagination of custom classic motorcycle riders everywhere, with the event spreading to 64 cities across the globe. The massive success of that first event has also inspired many organisers to use such goodwill to raise money for research into men’s health.
